Why Is Physical Activity Important?

            Physical inactivity is a major public health problem, and compelling evidence suggests that it is a contributing factor in several chronic diseases and conditions. Recognition of the health and functional hazards of a sedentary way of life has led numerous groups to promulgate public health recommendations for physical activity.

Regular physical activity can improve the health and quality of life of all ages, regardless of the presence of a chronic disease or disability. Among adults and older adults, physical activity can lower the risk of:

1) Early death

2) Coronary heart disease

3) Stroke

4) High blood pressure

5) Type 2 diabetes

6) Breast and colon cancer

7) Falls

8) Depression

For people who are inactive, even small increases in physical activity are associated with health benefits.
