Reduce Your Risk of Some Cancers

Reduce Your Risk of Some Cancers

Regular physical activity can help to reduce your chance of developing cancer. It roughly halves your chance of developing cancer of the colon (bowel cancer). Breast cancer is also less common in women who are regularly physically active.

Breast cancer is a type of cancer originating from breast tissue, most commonly from the inner lining of milk ducts or the lobules that supply the ducts with milk. Cancers originating from ducts are known as ductal carcinomas, while those originating from lobules are known as lobular carcinomas. Breast cancer occurs in humans and other mammals. While the overwhelming majority of human cases are in women, breast cancer can also occur in men.

The balance of benefits versus harms of breast cancer screening is controversial. The characteristics of the cancer determine the treatment, which may include surgery, medications, radiation or immunotherapy. Surgery provides the single largest benefit, and to increase the likelihood of remission, several chemotherapy regimens are commonly given in addition. Radiation is used after breast-conserving surgery and substantially improves local relapse rates and in many circumstances also overall survival.

Bowel cancer is a general term for cancer that begins in the large bowel. Depending on where the cancer starts, bowel cancer is sometimes called colon cancer or rectal cancer. Symptoms of bowel cancer include blood in your stools, an unexplained change in your bowel habits, such as prolonged diarrhoea or constipation, and unexplained weight loss.

 Research shows that:

1) Physically active people have a lower risk of colon cancer than do people who are not active.

2) Physically active women have a lower risk of breast cancer than do people who are not active.

Cancers could be prevented by:

1) not using tobacco products

2) maintaining a healthy weight

3) eating nutritious foods

4) being physically active

5) and avoiding too much sun.
